Cardiovascular disease may become apparent in the 31-50 year age group and whilst modern medicine has extended life expectancy, prevention through healthy lifestyle would improve quality of life in the later years. Heart disease results from a combination of risk factors. It is important that we are aware of these factors and work to reduce them.
To reduce the risk of heart disease:

  • Eat less fat, especially saturated fat
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Eat more fruit and vegetables, wholegrain food and soluble fiber (found in oats, beans and pulses)
  • Eat more legumes including dried peas and beans
  • Keep physically active
  • Don’t smoke
  • It is also important to monitor blood pressure and blood lipid levels (cholesterol and triglycerides), and maintain diabetes control if diabetic. A doctor can give advice about getting these levels tested.
