Looking back at an impactful 2022

Another eventful year has drawn to a close. As we bid goodbye to it, celebrating our wins, and start planning for the next year, it is important to use this time as an opportunity to reflect on the past year. Our global focus areas are firmly embedded in our purpose where we unlock the power of food to enhance the quality of life for everyone, today and for generations to come. Our Creating Shared Value approach enabled us to deliver on our promise to be a force for good in the society and allowed us to keep contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Reducing our carbon footprint

At Nestlé, we are cognizant of the impact of our business operations on the communities where we operate. Therefore, we constantly strive to reduce our carbon footprint. This year, we successfully reduced 49,000*[1] tCO2e of our carbon footprint. This reduction has been achieved through a number of interventions which include: replacing low-yield local cows with high-yield imported cows switching to renewable energy resources such as solar energy and biogas; and the plantation of climate-friendly Moringa trees which are well-regarded for their ability for carbon sequestration.

We have helped farmers embrace innovative technological solutions to reduce water wastage across hundreds of acres through installing drip irrigation and smart soil moisture sensors. We have also been able to regenerate 58%*[1] of the water used by Nestlé Waters through our interventions in factories, communities, and agricultural value chain.

Making waste-free future a reality

In line with our global vision for a waste-free future, Nestlé Pakistan partnered with the Gilgit Baltistan Waste Management Company (GBWMC) under Clean Gilgit Baltistan Project (CGBP). The project focuses on waste segregation and recycling systems for Gilgit and Hunza and facilitated responsible management of over 700 tons of PET and plastic packaging in the region. This achievement speaks to the commitment of our team to make a difference. Nestlé also installed over 24 benches and bins made from recycled material in different regions in Gilgit Baltistan. Our rigorous efforts were strengthened by distribution of over 10,000 reusable bags in the communities.

Our efforts to change behaviors and encourage a circular economy are the cornerstone of our waste-free future commitment in our initiative Travel Responsibly for Experiencing Eco-tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TREK). Our work to promote eco-tourism continued through capacity-building sessions held at various tourist hotspots in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Swat, Abbottabad, Chitral and Galiyat), we have trained nearly 400 hospitality professionals and aired a public awareness campaign across FM radios.

We are also committed to designing 100% of our plastic packaging for recycling. By 2025, we expect that more than 95% of it will be recyclable. To date, over 84% of our total packaging is already recyclable or reusable.

Nutrition awareness through Nestlé for Healthier Kids (N4HK) program

Looking out for the next generation is something we're passionate about and our N4HK program helps us do that by working closely with teachers, parents, and caregivers to increase nutritional awareness in children. In 2022, we successfully educated an additional 35,000 children and trained over 250 teachers, bringing the total to 320,000 children and 1,750 teachers. The program has extended its outreach to Gilgit Baltistan with a teacher training session on nutrition awareness in Skardu - giving both teachers and parents an avenue to learn about nutrition and help cultivate a healthy lifestyle for kids. We have also partnered with WWF-Pakistan to help teach the younger generation a more sustainable approach to packaging by managing waste through sustainability training sessions in partner schools.

Empowering rural women through Nestlé Rural Women Sales Program

With a mission to uplift rural women of Pakistan and put them on the path to prosperity, the Nestlé BISP Rural Women Sales Program was able to increase the number of enrolled BISP beneficiaries as sales agents to over 2200. Our Nestlé Rural Women Sales Program is a testament to our commitment to equality as rural women have now access to opportunities to support their families and gain financial independence.

Working together to aid communities ravaged by floods

As the devastating floods flared on – destroying homes and displacing communities, our global initiative of Nestlé Cares redirected its efforts through cash and in-kind support of 325,000 liters of water and 10,000 liters of milk to National Disaster Management Authority for distribution among the flood affectees. We also donated more than 700,000 servings of NESTLÉ BUNYAD, a specialized nutrition formula designed to meet children’s daily iron requirement. Our employees made cash donations worth PKR 3 million which were matched 1:1 by the company. A total of PKR 6 million was donated to Akhuwat Foundation for flood rehabilitation efforts. We also donated cash to Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2022 to support the rehabilitation process led by the government.

Our efforts and achievements in 2022 have set a high bar for the next year as we are determined to make an impact. We look forward to another year of collaborating and leveraging strength to be a force for good for each other.
