Safer Food, Better Health

Here at Nestlé, employees like Faria are helping to protect the health of consumers by practicing food safety at each levels

faria

Faria is a working mother. She has been a part of Nestlé, working as a microbiologist for the past 3 years. As a mother, she recognizes the significance of food safety and believes in the importance of her work. Food safety, nourishment, and food security are closely linked. Unsafe food produces a vicious cycle of illness and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, children, the elderly, and the sick. In addition to contributing to food and nutrition security, a safe food supply also supports national economies, and trade, and stimulates sustainable growth. The globalization of food trade, an increasing world population, climate change and rapidly changing food systems have an impact on the safety of food.

There is a range of tools and approaches available to address food safety problems. Nestlé is involved in food production, processing, distribution, and retail – ensure compliance with standards to identify, evaluate and control food safety hazards. From farm to factory to fork, food products may encounter numbers of health hazards during their journey through the supply chain. Safe food handling practices and procedures are thus implemented at every stage of the food production life cycle in order to curb these risks and prevent harm to consumers.

We are also active in research on new technologies to ensure that the best and most innovative scientific approaches are implemented to support the safety of our products.

Food safety is never static. Expectations shift, regulations change and our scientific knowledge evolves. That is why we constantly improve our procedures and share our expertise in industrial forums, with external authorities and our consumers. Packaging has a vital role to play in ensuring our products reach consumers in a safe condition. It also carries clear information about how to prepare, store and use the product, with information on ingredients as well as any allergen risks. We make sure that best-before and use-by dates are correct so consumers understand when the product will be past its best and when it will no longer be safe to consume. This also helps to avoid generating unnecessary waste.

At Nestlé we carry out various tests to verify product compliance with internal and external standards, including for harmful compounds or microorganisms in the materials we use, the environment we operate in, and also in our final products that reach the marketplace. We carefully manage the flow of ingredients and products in and out of our factories to ensure raw materials and prepared foods are properly segregated. Our factories have dedicated zones, equipment, and utensils for different ingredients to prevent cross-contamination.

We follow certified cleaning and sanitation practices at every step of production, and our employees like Faria are trained to fully adhere to the principles of good food hygiene. We ensure that these are safe and compliant with any regulatory requirements.
