Living a Good Life

Good Life
It's hard to figure out how one can lead a good, healthy life when every day we hear hundreds of different opinions on the matter. Take diets for example. What is better? low-fat, low-carb, low-sodium, protein-rich or simply balanced?  How much exercise should one get? And how on earth can we take the time out worry about these matters when we have such busy lives?

However if we want to enjoy a long and healthy life, it's important to figure out the real deal about health and wellness.

The basic building blocks are simple: a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and reducing stress. Eat well and stay active, and you can stay or reach a healthy weight and feel good.

Here’s our guide to living a good life:

Eat Right

Here are some tips to help you get started on a good, healthy lifestyle:

  • Have your breakfast. It'll give you the energy to start the day, and you are less likely to overeat later.
  • Have more whole-grains. Try whole-wheat bread and roti, have porridge or wholegrain cereals for breakfast with a glass of orange juice to help you absorb Iron.
  • Brighten up your plate. Different coloured vegetables have different health benefits, so try to have a variety of vegetables.
  • Use fats and oils sparingly. Try to use healthy fats such as Olive and Canola oils. Nuts, Avocados and fish also contain plenty of good oils.
  • Indulge your sweet tooth, but not too much. Limit foods that are high in added sugar.
  • Don't skip meals. Have all three meals a day.
  • Have low-fat and low-sugar snacks to combat hunger and avoid overeating.
    Move Right

While good eating habits are key to health and wellness, physical fitness should not be neglected. The World Health Organization defines health to be: "a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". Moderate physical exercise daily can help with every dimension of good health.

Try to integrate physical activity in your daily routine, whether as a thirty minute workout that you enjoy, or simply by parking your car a 10 minute walk from the office. Seize chances for physical activity: keep a pair of walking shoes in your car and get going the instant you feel like it.

    Feel Right

All the good food in the world won't help if you are feeling stressed. If anything, stress may make you overeat, feeling tired all the time or not wanting to do anything.

Here are a few tips to help you get on track to wellness:

  • Get exercise! That's the first step to reducing stress.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Practice deep breathing and relaxing your muscles one at a time.
  • Take a break and go for a walk.
  • Take short breaks to stretch throughout the day.
  • Try taking up yoga.
  • Try a new hobby, or any activity that interests you. Something creative like painting is especially helpful.
  • Hang out with people you like to be with.
