Nestlé Pakistan will be holding a seminar on Food Safety in collaboration with the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) to mark the World Health Day.

The theme of the seminar, which will be held at the end of April, will correspond with the global theme of the day this year: 'Food Safety'.

Unsafe food that is contaminated or contains harmful viruses, bacteria, parasites and chemical substances, causes more than 200 diseases worldwide and is linked to almost 2 million deaths across the globe every year, the World Health Organization estimates.

"For Nestlé, the quality and safety of our products is our top priority," said Naveed Ahmad Khan, the Head of Technical for Nestlé Pakistan. “Our approach to food safety covers the entire value chain, from farm to fork. We ensure, at each step – starting with farmers and suppliers, at receipt of raw and packaging materials, manufacturing, filling and packing and finally storage and distribution – that rigorous quality assurance and auditing processes are followed, he said. According to Mr. Ahmad, the company, globally, does more food testing than any other entity in the world, carrying out 100 million tests a year on its products to ensure quality and food safety.

PCSIR Director General (Lahore) Dr. Shahzad Alam termed unsafe food "a serious issue” which needs collective and coordinated efforts on part of all stakeholders. “I really appreciate Nestlé Pakistan’s efforts to highlight the importance of Food Safety by holding this seminar. It will enable us to sit down with many of the relevant stakeholdersand talk about tackling this issue."

Representatives from public and private sector institutions will be a part of the seminar as speakers and participants.

Nestlé Pakistan will soon be initiating visits to its factories for key opinion leaders to share with them how the company ensures food safety. In addition, the company will be partnering with educational institutions to introduce courses on food safety.
